Photo Meme

Atul Sabnis – fellow flickr-ite and blogger – tagged me not-so-recently in a unique photograph meme.

The tag is as follows:

“…All you have to do is select and upload one photo that you have clicked this year that is special to you. Could be anything…aesthetic, technical or personal. Also, put in a short note why it is special.”

This task is more daunting than I can say. Because my laptop is on the fritz, my choice is limited to what I have already publicized via flickr. Though that narrows down the possibilities considerably, I am still at a loss as to what I should choose. It is similar to asking me questions regarding favorite movies, books, music, and food – there is never a simple or singular answer. My choices are always qualified with genre, mood, artists, or specialty.

What photograph should I choose? Perhaps one of India – the amount of time that I have spent there in the past year is staggering, and the events that has since taken place even more so. Or maybe one of my grandmother – it is the only way to see her soft smile once again, and remember what it was like to see a bright bindi on her wide forehead.

Those are the photographs that call to me, but I cannot choose between the two – deciding on one would be abandoning the other.

Instead, I choose the static, unchanging subject that has sustained me this past year and has allowed me to bridge several worlds into one, giving me utmost satisfaction: writing. Though I mostly regard it to be another sort of exercise, I have grown attached to this form of expression, and my ability to display my thoughts in any way I choose – raw or cloaked, intentional or free-spirited. I intend to gain nothing from it but pleasure – the pleasure of tasting, deciding, and discarding words, the pleasure of feeling satisfied that my thoughts have been transposed into words just so, and the pleasure of knowing that it is a type of expression that shall never cease to exist – not in me, nor the countless other souls who call themselves writers.

This photograph is titled Impressions, taken sometime this past September with my humble Sony Cybershot.
